Brief 4 Home Brief The dark side of Lincoln a home away from home

For my home brief I wanted to focus my effort on where I live now as opposed to my actual home

I’ve never really known my home city of Cambridge at night because I lived 20 minutes outside of Cambridge and don’t really get to see it at night when everyone is sleeping and because all the busses stop at 11pm I can’t really stay in the city at night. In this instance I’ve never really seen Cambridge at night as my home. I started looking at Francesco Pergolesi work in his home town which he choose to take all at night “Before its too late i collect small fragments of memories” what he means by this is that all of small businesses will soon go under and these picture will be all that’s left.

A peg

One aspect I looked at was Gregory Crewdsons work on dream house and how it was applied to what I was initially planning to do with my images. Crewdson created amazing images of people in a home and adapted the people to fit the scene the image of the dad separated from the child is very powerful because it evokes the modern idea of broken families in the 21st century. It made me think about the idea of leaving home and that when a person leaves they are a little broken. “I’ve always been interested in the commonplace, in finding a sense of beauty and mystery in everyday life. I’ve always been interested in the psychological nature of picture,” This is one key aspect I am choosing to focus on in my pictures the idea of how we see and view our home and how others see it.

Martin Parr section think of England made me think about the patriotic side photography and how we view the people around us and our country I had planned initially to dabble with the idea of patriotism and national identity in relation to how people feel about their home country. “I wonder if the people in these images would have voted Brexit”. This idea made me think about the way we ourselves and how we feel about others and their belief in a system. What I am going for here is the idea that an image can change its meaning over time when the political climate changes the meaning of an image can change.

This First images reminds me of home because Cambridge has one very old famous lamppost called the reality checkpoint and seeing this old style lamppost really invoked the feeling of being at home.

This image of a street was taken for the fact that it has no significance, the reason for choosing a street like this is because my street I grew up on as a child also had no real significance.

This image really was taken because I really wanted to capture the city I live in surrounded by mist because on the way to school as a child my village was always surrounded by mist because of the fields of crops were always watered this image really reminded me of home.

Pubs have always had a special place in my family because for years my family owned a pub which was separated from any chain or brand whenever I’m in an independent pub it always reminds me of my childhood and how it was to know everyone by name in a pub.

In this image of a high street I was thinking back to Francesco Pergolesi and how he captured images of shops without brands and how the village I lived in didn’t have any major chain stores in till i was older and how a place can loss it identity if it loses its individuality.

6 tip 2brief 4

What I have done is look for features of Cambridge my home town in Lincoln. For instance, the pub right near to my house. Looks very similar to one here in Lincoln. I have begun to apply this to other images I took the street was chosen because it bears some resemblance to the street I lived on as a child it has the exact layout for the houses.
